DISCLAIMER: Please take note that this is not a post the give you permission to drink. It is merely my quarky response to a very informative blog article I read, of which you can follow the link further below.

Red wine is alcohol (duh) and we have heard many times that alcohol is bad for you, which it most definitely is if you consume too much of it. According to blogger Mark Davis there are 10 good reasons to drink red wine in moderation, of course, and it can be beneficial to your health. Follow the link here and read more about the health benefits he points out to us.

1 – Rich in antioxidants

2 – Lowers bad cholesterol

3 – Keeps heart healthy

4 – Regulates blood sugar

5 – Reduces the risk of cancer

6 – Helps treat common cold

7 – Keeps memory sharp

8 – Keeps you slim

9 – Reduces the risk of depression

10 – Has positive effects on the digestive system

Looking at the above list, it clearly has great health benefits and I can see why one glass of red wine in the evening can be of great benefit. When I look at number 7 – Keeps your memory sharp, I think I should have started this evening red wine routine long ago. It might help me to remember where I’ve put my keys or those things I hide in places that I wouldn’t (or shouldn’t) forget … and then I do forget. 🙂

Number 8 makes me wonder if I should’ve started with this red wine evening routine before birth!! Then I never would have stuggled with my weight. At the “mental space” I am in now I wonder if the red wine routine is such a good idea when you are feeling down or depressed? Wouldn’t it make you drink too much?

About 8 or 9 years ago, when my son’s Dad had a tripple bypass, the heart surgeon suggested to him to have one drink of whiskey every night. Being a teetotaler, this was a tall order for him. The surgeon said that the whiskey has a lot of benefits of which one is to prevent blood clotting. If he can’t do the whiskey, he then should try red wine. We had such a laugh after he came out of hospital – he tried the whiskey first and was totally disgusted by the taste of it. The next evening he took a sip of red wine and needless to say … to this day he will rather drink his tablets every day before he will have a shot of whiskey or a glass of red wine.

We all know that excessive drinking can have a lot of negative effects on your body. One is liver cirrhoss, which can be life threatening. One can still with moderation enjoy a glass or two of wine. While women can only enjoy 1 – 1.5 glasses a day, men can enjoy up to 2 glasses a day. It is also a good idea to have 2 or 3 days a week of no drinking at all – not only skipping red wine, but all alcoholic beverages.

You don’t have to drink the red wine, you can also use it in your recipes and still enjoy the health benefits of red wine.

They also say that red wine helps with treating headaches and red wine also kills the appetite. About treating headaches … I don’t know about that: I remember clearly that I used to wake up with a headache after enjoying some red wine the night before. 😀

Although, after discovering Robertson Winery’s Natural Sweet Red Wine, I don’t seem to have a headache the next morning.

Till next time!
